What to Expect with SkinFeel™ by Silab Prosthetics

SkinFeel™ by Silab Prosthetics is dedicated to the provision of the highest levels of services in helping our clients to overcome challenges and regain confidence, return function and ultimately to go back to all the activities they enjoy in all social environments. Our goal is to provide the most realistic custom cosmetic prostheses available to our clients anywhere in the world to permit our clients to live dynamic, rewarding and extraordinary lives.

In order to produce world class state of the art custom made cosmetic prosthetic limbs at SkinFeel™ we follow a step by step process to ensure that the cosmetic prosthetic matches all the needs of our clients. The time of manufacture depends on the type of amputation, the aesthetic choice of the prosthesis and the desired finish (Custom, Semi-Custom or Standard Prosthesis Design) as well as the type of fixation required.

Whether you are choosing a Custom, Semi-custom or Standard silicone cosmetic prosthesis from SkinFeel™ by Silab Prosthetics we follow a strict process to deliver you the highest quality prosthesis.  Each process differs slightly due to the complexity level. Once you have chosen your desired prosthesis, we have documented below what you can expect when you are working with the team at SkinFeel™.

Custom

Custom prostheses are for clients seeking a high level of realism in form, shape and tone. SkinFeel™ by Silab Prosthetics hyper-realistic custom silicone prostheses are world class. We use a unique mix of casting shape creation that applies a mix of 3D technology use, sculpture and artistic design for a hand finished transparent silicone glove. The final glove has a realistic skin coloration and includes acrylic nails. The creation of a custom prosthesis is based entirely on an existing limb. The process of creating a Custom Silicone Prosthesis can vary in length and requires two in-person consultations. The process we follow to consult with you and create your specific custom prosthesis is:

  • Initial Consultation: A review of your specific needs, amputation details and discussion of your lifestyle to determine the best suitable solution. This stage can be done remotely and informs us in the preparation of the first appointment. We will request information about your amputation and that you send us some photos and other details. At this stage we will provide you with a quotation for the creation of a custom prosthesis.
  • 1st Appointment: The first stage is casting, which involves taking a series of measurements and moulds which will be used to create the final shape of your specific custom prosthesis. This first appointment requires approximately 3-4 hours of your time to complete the casting process and to review your needs and reply to all your questions.
  • Shaping and moulding: In this phase we will commence to build the shape of your prosthesis. The shaping process takes different lengths of time depending upon your specific required prosthesis. For example, it takes about 2 weeks for fingers and about 3 weeks for hands and feet. Your presence is not required during this stage.
  • 2nd Appointment: Once the shape is ready for the colouration, we require a second appointment with you in order to complete the colouration process with you for exact fitting and pairing. During this process we will match the silicon “skin” nail colouration, fitting. The colour matching is performed in your presences in order to respecting every detail: Skin tone, veins, freckles, etc. Nails are also subject to a measure, respecting the shape of each nail (square, oval, rectangular or even French Manicure). It will take up to two days for a finger prosthesis and five days for an arm.

At the end of the second appointment you will be able to leave with your prosthesis.

In some cases, it is possible that the client can perform the casting process remotely under our guidance and send us the final cast and reduce the need for the first appointment to just one final appointment for the colouring of the skin. If this is possible in your case, we can provide you with the information you require to obtain the self-releasing safe silicone for the cast creation. Additional we will provide video instructions and our support remotely.

In the case a client is unable to stay throughout the entire process of creation of the prosthesis, we can deliver the prosthesis by post after the conclusion of the colouring process.

The entire process of creating a custom prosthesis can take between 6 weeks to 3 months.

Semi-Custom

Our Semi-custom range provides clients with all the hyper realistic colouring and design on a standard model cast that matches the client’s original limb as closely as possible in measurement and shape. It also provides a hand finished transparent silicone glove coloration that includes acrylic nails. It is the ideal solution for clients looking for a lower cost solution, while also maintaining a high level of realism. Using a ready-made model, we are able to speed up the process of creation and you can expect the following process for the creation of your semi-custom prosthesis:

  • Initial Consultation: A review of your specific needs, amputation details and discussion of your lifestyle to determine the best suitable solution. This stage can be done remotely and informs us in the preparation of the first appointment. We will request information about your amputation and that you send us some photos and other details. At this stage we will provide you with a quotation for the creation of a semi-custom prosthesis.
  • 1st Appointment: At the first appointment, we will work to determine the closest shape from our range to your requirements and if we have that available in stock, we will immediately begin the transparent prosthesis colouration process. This will include the silicone skin colouring, nail colouring and fitting. This first appointment also allows us to review your needs and reply to all your questions. If colouring can take place during this appointment, then a second appointment is not required. The process of colouring the prosthesis, nail colouring and fitting will take between two and five days depending upon the prosthesis.

If the shape is available, it is possible for you to leave at the end of this appointment with your prosthesis.

  • Casting and Shaping: If the required shape is not available, we will take a casting in order to provide the shape for colouring during the second appointment.
  • 2nd Appointment: Once the shape is ready for the colouration, we require a second appointment with you in order to complete the colouration process for exact fitting and pairing. During this process we will match the silicone “skin” and nail colouration, as well as perform the final fitting. The colour matching is performed in your presences in order to respecting every detail: Skin tone, veins, freckles, etc. Nails are also subject to a measure, respecting the shape of each nail (square, oval, rectangular or even French Manicure). This process will take two days for a finger prosthesis and five days for an arm. At the end of this appointment it will be possible to leave with the prosthesis.

In the case a client is unable to stay throughout the entire process of creation of the prosthesis, we can deliver the prosthesis by post after the conclusion of the colouring process.

The entire process of creating a custom prosthesis can take between up to 2 months.

Standard

The Standard range of silicone prostheses from SkinFeel™ by Silab Prosthetics is the fastest and simplest way to obtain a realistic prosthesis to meet your needs. We have a wide range of shapes and designs that clients can select from, including a range of 16 different skin colour tones. When clients select our most cost-effective solution, we will follow a simplified set of steps in the fabrication and delivery:

  • Initial Consultation: A review of your specific needs, amputation details and discussion of your lifestyle to determine the best suitable solution. This stage can be done remotely and informs us in the preparation of the first appointment. Simply provide us with your needs and photos and at this stage we will provide you with a quotation.
  • Residual Limb Cast: In the case of total or partial amputations for fingers, hands, toes and feet in order to ensure the right fit to your residual limb, we require you to provide us with a cast of the residual limb. You can do this remotely in your location and we will provide you with instructions on how to do this with video and remote support provided. Note: For clients requiring forearm gloves a cast is not required only the provision of measurements and pictures.
  • Selection: In consultation with us and the images and measurements provided by the client we will identify the most appropriate shape and skin tone.
  • Fitting: Using the residual limb cast the client has provided we will ensure an as accurate as possible fit in the final prosthesis.
  • Delivery: The final delivery of the standard prosthesis can be either collection from our offices in Lisbon or we can post via international courier anywhere in the world.

While it is not imperative for a standard prosthesis, it is always better to visit our offices for finalising the choice of the desired shape, skin tone and required nails and for the cast fitting.
